What is the difference between soap and hand sanitizer?

The main difference between soap and hand sanitizer as follows

  •     Soap is solid in nature. But hand sanitizer liquid in nature.
  •     It is easy to use hand sanitizer as compare with soild soap more             frequently.
  •     Soap solution creates hand etching. Hand sanitizer won't create             hand etching.
  •     Soap solution is more alkaline in nature. Hand sanitizer weak acidic        or near neutral pH.
  •     Hand sanitizer spread throughout the hand as compare with                     soap solution.
  •     Hand sanitizer are more effective as compare to soap solution.

At first, we will discuss the formulation for hand sanitizer as per the recommendation of World Health Organisation (WHO), as given below. How to make Hand Sanitizer at Home easy?

Formulation for Hand Sanitizer I

The chemical composition for hand sanitizer is with the following chemical in proper proportions. Hand sanitizer composition to produce with the final concentration of ethanol 75-80% v/v, glycerol 1-1.45% v/v, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) 0.5-0.125% v/v. v/v means, the volume of particular chemical in percentage divided with the total volume of solution preparation.

Preparation of Hand Sanitizer into a 1000 ml graduated flask or glass beaker:
  1. Ethanol or Ethyl Alcohol 96- 99% v/v, 800 - 833.3 ml
  2. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) 2-3% v/v, 38 - 41.7 ml
  3. Glycerol 96-98% v/v,14.5 ml
Finally, make up the flask or beaker to 1000 ml with distilled water (DM water) or water that has been boiled, filtered and cooled; shake the flask gently to mix the contents of the solution. Hand sanitizer should be in the homogeneous form.

If you are able to buy these chemicals from a druggist or Online marketplace, you will readily get all these items. But you want to use the material available from the home. You can follow the following protocol.
  • If Ethanol or Ethyl Alcohol is not available, you can use shaving lotion.
  • If Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is not available, you can use ear cleaner in that place.
  • If glycerol is not available, then you can use fash cleaning gel or aloe vera gel.
In this way, you can make a hand sanitizer from home for the shortage of times in the marketplace. If there is an outbreak such as coronavirus, then you can make your hand sanitizer from the home. This particular composition is useful all types of germs (For example, SARS virus, Coronavirus (COVID-19), bacterial infection etc). Preparation of Hand Sanitizer into a 1000 ml graduated flask or glass beaker:
  1. Isopropyl Alcohol (with a purity of 99.8%), 680 - 751.5 ml
  2. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2 ) 3%, 38 - 41.7 ml
  3. Glycerol 96- 98%, 14.5 ml
Finally, make up the flask or beaker to 1000 ml with distilled water (DM water) or water that has been boiled, filtered and cooled; shake the flask gently to mix the contents of the solution. Formulation for Hand Sanitizer III

The chemical composition for hand sanitizer is with the following chemical in proper proportions in addition of silver ion (anti-viral agent). Hand sanitizer composition to produce with the final concentration of ethanol 75-80% v/v, glycerol 1-1.45% v/v, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) 0.5-0.125% v/v and silver nitrate (AgNO3) 0.5-0.1% w/w.
v/v means, the the volume of particular chemical in percentage divided with the total the volume of solution preparation. w/w means, the weight of any chemical in percentage divided with the total weight of solution in percentage. The density of water is one. Water's volume is equal to weight.
Preparation of Hand Sanitizer into a 1000 ml graduated flask or glass beaker:
  1. Ethanol or Ethyl Alcohol 96- 99% v/v, 800 - 833.3 ml
  2. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) 2-3% v/v, 38 - 41.7 ml
  3. Glycerol 96-98% v/v,14.5 ml
  4. Silver nitrate 99% w/w, 100 mg or 0.1g
Finally, makeup the flask or beaker to 1000 ml with distilled water (DM water) or water that has been boiled, filtered and cooled; shake the flask gently to mix the contents of the solution. Hand sanitizer should be in the homogeneous form.

Why we need a hand sanitizer to kill coronavirus (COVID-19)?

Before answer this question, we need to know about the basic biology of eukaryote cell and virus or coronavirus (COVID-19) surface morphology. First, eukaryote cell surface is made by a lipid bilayer. Lipids are nothing but cholesterol. Further, it can be classified into low density cholesterol lipid (LDC-lipid) and High Density Cholesterol lipid (HDC- lipid). Among these, High density cholesterol is good one which is soluble in water. But low density cholesterol is not soluble in water.

Lipid is very similar to a surfactant molecule. In a surfactant molecule, it has a long chain with one or more non-polar end (not soluble in water) and polar end (soluble in water). These surfactant molecules at particular concentration creates micelles. This concentration is called Critical Micellar Concentration (CMC). But lipid creates bilayer with a capsule like structure in eukaryote cell and virus or coronavirus (COVID-19).

Moreover, if the non-polar end is long, it is called low density cholesterol lipid (LDC-lipid). If the non-polar end is short in range, it is called High Density Cholesterol lipid (HDC- lipid). Eukaryote cell and virus or coronavirus (COVID-19) capsule surface contain active proteins. In a eukaryote cell, it is called G-coupled proteins and ion channels. Similarly, you can see more spikes of active proteins in the surface of virus or coronavirus (COVID-19).

Finally, two method is possible to kill coronavirus (COVID-19) in room temperature. First method, surfactant molecule of soap solution or hand wash to break the coronavirus (COVID-19) lipid bilayer. It need 20 to 30 seconds to kill coronavirus (COVID-19). In second method, hand sanitizer to deactivate or denature the surface protein of coronavirus (COVID-19). This denaturing of protein reaction takes place with in 2-3 seconds. Hand sanitizer is much faster reactivity towards coronavirus (COVID-19) than hand wash and soap solution.
