pH scale use for analysis of water bodies

Purpose of pH scale experiment in water bodies:
pH test in water bodies give unique opportunities for school students to learn science from nature. All over the places, you can see water as an abundant material in nature. This makes earth blue color. pH test is applicable in all science method or science projects. In addition pH scale acts as a universally proven science method. Here we discuss science  projects for grade students.

The water resource is one of the largest resources in nature. Moreover, It plays a very essential role in our day to day life. Even though we have very large water resources in our nature. But we can't use most of them for our domestic or industrial purpose.

Before we discuss the science method of pH test. Firstly we start with the question and answer about the importance of pH, pH test and their biological application.

1. What is pH of the water and their application in a science project?

As we discussed the basics of acid in our previous blog post. Here, we are going to the application of the acid concept in our real day to day life. Water is an abundant material on our planet which is more than 2/3 of it. We have plenty of water in the sea and ocean. But we can't use it. Still date we mainly depend on land lying water resources.

Shall we use all the water resources? There are two types of water hard water and soft water. Here, we are not going to discuss heavy water.  Soft water is the only water for domestic usage. you may ask, if I use hard water, then you will face multiple consequences related to health. It will arise with lots of health issues. Because there are so many dissolved divalent minerals in that water.

All underground and surface water bodies running through the mineral resources restlessly. Most of our mineral resources contain divalent ions such as calcium and magnesium. These are the main divalent ions responsible for the hardness of the water. It affects the pH of water resources. Moreover, it induces the hardness in water.

2. What is pH scale and its measurement in a science project?

Before moving any further, what is pH scale? It is nothing but a negative log of H+ ions concentration. This linear equation works well with all dilute solution. But we can't use it for the same with highly concentrated acid and alkali. Moreover, This formulae gives a good result with a dilute solution. In general, you get very good linearity in a dilute solution. If you move for higher concentration, then it shows more non-linear characteristics.

In addition to that pH scale generally measured in the range of 1 to 14 scale. There is no unit for pH scale. The normal drinking water should come under 7 to 7.5. But the pH scale for water ideally falls near to 7 with less or more, generally, water should come on a pH scale of 7. If it moves to the pH scale of 1, then that particular solution shows more acidic characteristics. In contrast, if it moves to the pH scale of 14, then it indicates more basic characteristics.

In particular, school science projects need very simple doable experiments. In general, water is not a toxic material. So you get permission easily from science fair authority. From this, you can generate multiple Science fair Project Ideas. These things easily doable in science projects grade students.

3. What is the pH scale of living cells?

In particular living, cells are formed in the confined environment in all variety of molecules that vary from small to macro size. So some of them behave acid characteristics, some of them with basic characteristics and moreover some molecules stay as neutral. H+ ion is responsible for the acid pH scale.

Do you know the pH of our living cells or blood? It also falls in the same range. Interestingly, All living things evolved from water. So that in this experiment we are going to investigate the pH of our water bodies in our localities with the different seasons throughout the year.

2. pH meter                         -------------------------          one
3. pH buffer (range 7-8)       -------------------------          one liter
4. Beaker                             -------------------------          two nos
5.Thermostat                       ------------------------           one
5. Gloves                              ------------------------           12 pairs

pH scale analysis: Standard Operating Protocol(Science Method)

1. You try to collect the water samples from different localities. The very important step is to choose the correct locality. Notably, each locality should be different from others. At least, they should be separated by 2-3 km from one another. Before selecting the localities, you carried out detail soil study. well, it is easily doable in any civil engineering department from nearby colleges. These soil analysis gave a better understanding of that particular locality. Soil analysis reports should be a little different from other locality.

2. Each locality collects three samples. If you are collecting from five localities, then you will get around 15 samples. you label them with the name of that particular locality and date of sample collection.

3. You standardize the pH meter with a given buffer solution. You keep the pH scale near 7 to 8 in the pH meter.

4. You filter the water samples with filter paper. Then you introduce these samples in pH meter for analysis. you check the pH value in three temperatures. For example, you can measure the pH test in the temperature of 25 C, 35 C, and 50 C.

5. You tabulate them in the correct order with the date of sample collection and analysis. Weekly once you collect the water samples from the localities. If it is not possible, then you try to collect samples monthly twice for a pH test.

6. After the year of analysis on the entire four seasons, you get detail statistical survey on pH of water in your localities.

In this statistical survey, you can present in any science fair. This Science Project gives an opportunity to generate many Science projects on pH scale. This type of science method gives the chance to learn new thing about our nature.

In this blog, we mainly focus on science fair projects for 7th grade and science fair projects for 8th grade students. you can see more project ideas updates in our sitemap.
