Mineral Makeup kit development from Soil Mineral extraction

Purpose of the experiment:

The aim of the experiment is to extract out the minerals from the soil and develop mineral makeup kit, then you can use them for further studies. From these experimental results, you can be displayed as the outcome to the national or international science fair about the geological scientific survey about the minerals in your locality. science fair projects for 4th graders with magnets is to know about magnetic fields.

How mineral(metal) extracted from the soil? Do you know the process? How can school students do this experiment? How mineral sediments form in nature? Our earth contains enormous resources of minerals. If you see in the periodic table, there are so many metals in number as compare with non-metals. There are some metalloids also.

These category elements pose both metallic and non-metallic characteristics. On the earth's surface, contains so much of metalloids. It is nothing but silicon. We find anywhere in the world more quantity of silica (SiO₂). Nowadays we are using them in different industrial applications.
This varies from electronics to healthcare.

Non-metal compounds just move around the atmosphere as molecular species. Metal easily reacts with these species and forms compounds. These compounds are much more stable than native metal. This mixture of compounds is called minerals. In this experiment, we are going to extract out the mineral from the soil. Before going for an experiment, we start with a question and answer sessions.

School Science Project: Extracting Mineral from Soil (Metal)

What is a mineral and use in mineral makeup kit?

Except for noble metal, other metals extracted from minerals. We can extract mineral by mining method. The metal reacts very easily in the presence of air or other atmospheric species. These give a stable compound. This mixture of the compound gives mineral. Most of the useful metals are extracted out from these minerals.

These minerals used as a main ingredient in the mineral makeup kit. Minerals such as zinc oxide, talc powder and titanium oxide used in the preparation of mineral makeup. Iron oxide plays very important role in mineral makeup kit.

What is noble metal and their use in mineral makeup?

The metal which is stable in its nature is called noble metals such as Au, Ag, Pt. They won't undergo any corrosion. This is due to their stable electronic configuration in the periodic table. Nobel metals are more expensive metal in our daily life. These metals show very well electric and thermal conducting properties. But due to its cost, we can't use it in the industry.

Some mineral makeup kit uses the nanodiamond, silver, gold dust as a fashion makeup kit.

What is corrosion and its relation to mineral?

The degradation of metal in the presence of a corrosive environment or other factors is called corrosion. This is the natural process, we are just trying to control corrosion.

M   →   Mn+ + ne⁻

Here, 'M' represents metal due to the influence of corrosive environmental factors. It loses its 'n' number of electrons and forms the Mn+ion. This is one of the fundamental equations for corrosion. There are different types of corrosion. In this current post, we are not going in detail. Here we are pointing briefly. They can be classified into the following categories.
  1. Electrochemical corrosion
  2. Dry corrosion
  3. Liquid metal corrosion.
The first two types of corrosions are very common in the environment. They generally take place in any corrosive environment or corrosive medium in nature. Nowadays, plastic or polymer or polymer-metal composite tries to replace the metal in the commercial application. But until now, it is not achieved completely. Throughout the globe, scientists are trying to remove or reduce the corrosion effect on the metal. Because every year, we lose billions of dollars due to the adverse effect of corrosion.

Now we will discuss the materials require to perform this mineral extraction experiment. These minerals extracts use in mineral makeup kit development.

Materials required for the mineral extraction experiment:

  1. Sand soil (better from river bed or seashore)          -      100gm
  2. normal bar magnet                                                     -     1 no
  3. Beaker                                                                         -      2 no
  4. Wash bottle                                                                 -     1 no
  5. Water (purified water)                                               -     1 liter
  6. Plain or butter   paper                                               -     1 piece
  7. Gloves (depend on hand size)                                   -     12 pairs

Standard Operating Protocol:

Step 1: You take  100gm of dry soil in the butter paper.
Step 2: Then you take one bar magnet. Bar magnet immerses on the soil for about 8-10 times.
Step 3: Magnetically active mineral attached to this magnetic bar. You remove the magnetically active minerals manually into the beaker. After the removal of minerals from the bar magnet, you just keep on doing step 2 repeat for 4 more times.
Step 4: Once the no more magnetically active mineral is not sticky to the magnetic bar, then you can stop the mineral extraction from the soil.
Step 5: After mineral extraction of soil, you just note down the weight loss of the soil. It will give the raw mineral extraction weight from the soil.
Step 6:The mineral extracted from the soil introduces for continuous washing to remove the impurities.
Step 7: After washing, dry the sample under sunlight for about 8hrs.(If you have a closet, you use them. It may stop dust interference)
Step 8: You note down the weight of mineral collected from the sandy soil.
Step 9: Convert the value into the percentage.

Statistical survey for mineral extraction:

You collect the sample from the different locality of your area or nearby areas throughout the year. Then you label them with the correct number and the same you note down in your notebook. The samples analyzed by using the above-said protocol. you repeat all experiments three times for accuracy.

If you are not getting the same concordant value, don't worry. You can take the average for that locality. What is the sample collection duration time? you try to collect samples weekly once. If it is not possible, you can take the sample two weeks once. But you follow this same for about a year.

You can plot them using Excel or google spreadsheet. The average weight percentage is taken on the Y-axis and different months of the year mark in the X-axis for each locality (you can use bar plot also). Then you overlay all localities in the same plot for the entire year period. You can compare each and every locality mineral extraction with others. These results can be displayed in the science fair as a good poster.

These mineral extracts use for the mineral makeup kit development. In future bolg update we will discuss about mineral makeup kit in detail.
